Dexter Dalwood - Simon Lee Gallery Exhibition

"What Is Really Happening"

Simon Lee Gallery

Dexter Dalwood seeks to explore many possibilities within the medium of painting. In this exhibition he paints from point of view, and there are no people featured in any of the paintings. I think it connects to my project theme of memory well. I think NBC phrased it well when they explained how " He crafts narratives of memory that bring together the past, present and future in a single image, forging a bridge between our interpretation of what has already come to pass and that which has yet to happen." The paintings themselves are intriguing and implore their audience to try and determine what is really being shown within in the enigmatic scenes. His paintings have a sort of cut and pasted, collage like quality to them which I find really interesting and makes me curious to find out more about his process.

I love the texture and shadow applied here. He appears to approach his painting with a very light touch. The imperfections in his proportions add strength to the paintings I think, giving a sort of dreamlike feel to them.

Each painting sets a scene that feels somehow familiar yet at the same time foreign, there is an air of mystery to them. I love the above use of color. I have been feeling more and more drawn towards shades of blues, especially when applied amongst grays and black- this could be a visual tool for color reference later.

Dalwood aims to create imagery that will speak to his viewers and “where, for just a nano-second, they can look at something and not just consume it. In that moment they are thinking about what they’re looking at in front of them.” I think he achieves just that.
