Sketchbook Research

Today I tried a slightly different approach to my sketchbook research. I began by painting loose sheets of paper, and cut them up into various shapes. I experimented with different arrangements with the shapes until I was satisfied, eventually gluing the arrangements I found to be interesting into my sketchbook. This exercise was helpful in that I felt less obligated to begin with perfect forms. This way I was able to feel less pressure to create something "good" straight away which I think made the finished product less contrived and therefor more successful. I think this could be a good way to help plan not only shapes and their interactions, but also color for larger paintings. While working on these, I was referencing some of Georges Braque's collages and paintings which I had previously mentioned.
