Exploration of Dream Spaces in Drawing
I have been doing far less drawing than I had initially intended. This is simply because I have been finding collage so helpful instead in working quickly to discover interesting shapes and color. Today I wanted to explore space through drawing. These drawings are based on dreams I'd had not long ago where I was walking though long hallways and empty spaces alone. The intention was to re-create fragments of these dreams on paper.
I like the definition, texture, and linear markings that I was able to achieve within the drawing. I find sometimes that drawing can take some of the spontaneity that I find in my collage out of the process, resulting in more obvious shapes and patterns. I still think drawing is an extremely important exercise in my practice but I am aware that it is not necessarily my strong suit.
Again texturally I like these drawings, but I mainly find them to merely be a good exercise for me, warming up to painting. I can quickly get ideas out by sketching through some of them, yet most of the shapes and ideas come across too literal and for that reason I will not be carrying them across to my larger works. I think drawing is something I should continue working to improve upon as it is very helpful in building ideas and structure within painting.
