Federico Fellini - Imagery

Federico Fellini

One thing I find interesting about Federico Fellini's films (apart from the dreamlike and bizarre qualities of his settings) is simply the way in which he uses people and architecture to break up imagery into geometric shapes. I find his work compositionally very interesting and inspiring.

In this particular frame doorways and stairs split up the frame into lots of rectangles and horizontal lines, the fence crossing the bottom creates almost a flat stripe border. I love the way the people are scattered about, at varying levels. I think this could be an interesting composition to explore in painting abstract, if I broke down and simplified the shapes.

I find his use of prosthetics to manipulate the human body fascinating. He like to exaggerate and distort many of his subjects, which i think created interesting shapes in themselves.

Compositionally I find this still interesting. I like the jaggedness of the stairs, leading into the very large rounded body and skirt. I also like the texture of the clothes (the fishnet elements and feathers) and how they work well together in contrast of the smooth background and sharp bisecting line of the rail.

Many of his themes are dramatic and surrealist in nature, which I love. The lines in this still divide up the image interestingly. I could imagine this as a painting, particularly with the odd placement of the figure.
