Jadé Fadojutimi - Peer Gallery Exhibition
Jadé Fadojutimi
"The Numbing Vibrancy of Characters in Play"
Exhibition at the Peer Gallery.
I very much enjoyed visiting this exhibition. I found Jadé Fadojutimi's way of painting to be vibrant and distinct. Her paintings seem to waver between abstract gestures and repeated forms, with an underlying graphic theme to them.
The artist’s current work depicts scenes of ‘familiar unfamiliarity’, where far away places and plants / organic substance fluctuate in and out of abstraction. The paintings naturally relate and react to one another and I think the conversation between them when displayed in a gallery space like this is important. I particularly like the use of color in the painting above.
Fadojutimi has been heavily influenced by Japanese anime since she was a child, and for this reason her paintings are meant to carry a narrative quality to them. Writing plays a large part in her artistic process. This is clearly evident in some of the line work she uses. Her paintings to me feel extremely energetic, unrepressed, and honest.
Fadojutimi cites significant women abstract artists such as Amy Sillman, Varda Caivano, Nicola Tyson, and Phoebe Unwin as influences on her practice.
