Alexandra Bircken - Herald Street Gallery Exhibition

All of Birckin's work had a distinctly "handmade" quality to it because of the use of  natural materials and fibers such as wool yarn etc. The way the pieces were put together felt very organic. There is also a definite feminine feel to the work in some the the delicate nature applied in the woven wool, or sewn together fabric, etc.

In this particular hanging piece above I found the division of weight interesting, and the responsibility of the hanging pieces to carry  greater weights. It felt fragile in a sense, despite its morbid appearance. I found this piece to be the most visually interesting to me. I feel curious about the combination of shapes and thought about how they could be represented abstractedly in 2D. I also found the use of mixed media here successful, all the organic thread woven intricately together was beautiful.
