Diane Simpson - Herald Street Gallery Exhibition
Diane Simpson
Herald Street Gallery
I found Diane Simpson's works to be interesting structurally as well as texturally. I like her use of mixed metals. Her pieces appear to mimic a ladder of some kind, free standing and multi-tiered. What I found most interesting about this small exhibition of her work, was being able to see her drawings in graphite planning out her sculptural pieces. The drawings gave their viewer the ability to imagine how her sculptures were invented and eventually realized. I always find this interesting when examining other people's work as it is a window into their mind and process, which opens up ideas and conversation about different ways to approach work. It looks as though Simpson's pieces are designed as separate jigsaw pieces, meant to be slotted together to keep them standing.
