Color Studies
Because my last painting went unsuccessfully in my opinion, I felt I needed to spend some time re-assessing my research and experimenting in my sketchbook before I attempted another painting. I decided to do a few quick color studies to get some ideas going.
I still like allowing some of the charcoal to come through in certain areas although I think this can be overdone (as shown above). I drew inspiration for this one compositionally from John Bellany's "The Gambler" which I recently visited at his exhibition at the Newport Street Gallery exhibition (pictured below).
I love the oddity in this painting. The heart sticks out to me, and the deformity in the head of the figure.
The intention behind these was really to experiment with color as well as mark making. I think I was successful here in bringing a broader range of hues to the colors I was using. I like the dark background because it seems to create an illusion that the shapes are floating over the background.
